July 2015: Observation Rock
On July 3 I climbed up to Observation Rock. There was some snow, which
started at 7,000 feet (5 miles and 2,100 of elevation gain into the hike).
In a sure sign that its summer, the big black biting flies (horseflies?)
were out in force. I thought I'd lose them when I got out on the snow,
but that didn't happen; I was escorted most of the way up. They didn't
score any bites and I took 2 of them out, so I guess I won.
I beat the crowds going in and had the Spray Park trail to myself,
but it was mobbed when I came out. The Mowich parking area was full
and there were cars parked along the road for a half mile below the
lot. I guess its a good thing that tourists haven't learned how
nice the trails are at 7:30 AM.
